Traditional handmade paper uses natural plant fibers such as bamboo, mulberry bark and rattan. It relies on natural fermentation instead of strong chemical bleaches. Its waste is biodegradable and causes little pollution to water and soil.
- Raw material pretreatment: Cutting branches, stripping bark and bundling materials.
- Retting and fermenting: Soak the materials with plant ash or lime, then boil them in large cauldrons. This ancient technique uses no industrial chemicals. Fibers are softened by prolonged high-temperature stewing, which often lasts several days.
- Rinsing and pounding: Repeatedly wash the materials with clean water to remove impurities and lime. Workers beat the fibers thoroughly with stone mortars or wooden mallets to refine them and produce raw paper pulp.
- Sheet forming: Mix pulp with water in a paper trough, then manually lift paper with a bamboo screen. The thickness of the paper layer is controlled by feel.
- Pressing for dewatering: Stack multiple wet sheets and squeeze out excess water with heavy weights.
- Drying and separating paper sheets: Traditionally, paper is baked on heated walls or air-dried naturally. Finally, the sheets are peeled off one by one and trimmed at the edges.
